Exploring the ‘westernization’ on youth culture in contemporary Shanghai, Back Hand Studios aimed to take western streetwear and juxtapose it against a historic Chinese mansion house.
Working in a site-specific context, the main focus of my role for this project was creating a worn and chaotic effect. Water and plaster of Paris were used on the wooden flooring and banister while props were placed to create clutter and senselessness. There were two key looks with additional accessories and four site changes.
The shoot took over twelve hours and involved a technical crew of five, four models, and two make-up artists.
Costumes
I wanted to design a playful take on streetwear fashion adding a splash of colour contrasting against the dark of the set. Fun accessories completed the look and gave the models the chance to be creative in the shoot. Some of the items were outsourced and others (including the dress above) were made using my designs.
